Acclaimed worldwide as one of the greatest centers of learning arts and literature, the Vishwa-Bharati is undoubtedly the foremost tourist attraction in Shantiniketan. Associated with the dynamic influence and personality of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the university has been developed as a pioneer for defining the standards in the field of literary excellence and moral education. Founded by Tagore in 1901 as a small ashram with only five students, the university today has been recognized as one of the best institutions of international culture and studies. It is divided into two campuses- one at Shantiniketan and another is at Sriniketan. Known as Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore's abode, Tagore's Ashram is one of the must visit places in Shantiniketan. A heritage site well preserved by the authorities, this place is a giant mark left by our beloved Gurudev. The site has archived his life in the form of his literary works, his awards, and accolades, daily items used by him and his love for nature. One cannot help but feel his presence all over the area. Housing every detail of Tagore's life, it takes visitors back in time. Along with the very well-curated museum, it houses other important buildings including the 5 Tagore houses. School classes and primary functions are held under the Amra Kunja (mango grove). Irrespective of whether you have read his works or not, this place is bound to instill a sense of pride in you and give you peace of mind.
Located in close vicinity of the University, Amar Kutir showcases a number of locally made handicrafts, including leather printed bags, printed cloth etc. Amar Kutir is a cooperative unit that produces leather goods, kantha stitched saris, bamboo crafts and batik at a reasonable price. Its leather-craft unit employs mostly women. It has one batik, a needlecraft unit and shola and lac crafts units.
While at Shantiniketan, you must visit the Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary. Just a kilometer from the Viswa Bharati University area, this lush Wildlife Sanctuary is home to three large water bodies (Jheel) which hosts migratory as well as resident birds in plenty. The Sanctuary is home to a variety of deer and water birds apart from jackals and foxes. Look out for small herds of black buck and spotted deer as you tour the sanctuary.
If you want to attend this fair, you will have to plan your trip around a Saturday. The fair starts from the morning and artisans from all the nearby places set up stalls. Household items, Handicrafts, clothes etc are sold in plentiful. This is a worth place to visit for those who really want to get hold of some unique handcrafted items and clothes at a very pocket-friendly budget.
